From Losing Everything to Permanent Residency in the U.S.

Three and a half years ago, I had a consultation with an immigrant. While in the US temporarily, his wife filed for divorce to his surprise. Between his country falling apart and his family situation in peril, he filed for asylum late (beyond the 1-year filing deadline). I told him if we can explain the delay but file asap, we have a chance to get it approved. I attended his expedite request interview in late March 2021 and today we received his approval from the Houston Asylum office dated from April. In less than a year he can apply for legal permanent residency. I am really happy they approved this since the office is known to be tough on late filings even though the law and policy has explained exceptions. He was very happy when my associate attorney and I broke the news to him this afternoon.
