International students in F-1 status should pay close attention to increased federal scrutiny surrounding Curricular Practical Training, commonly known as CPT.
Recent federal guidance has placed renewed attention on how universities authorize CPT and whether employment is sufficiently connected to a student’s academic curriculum.
What Is CPT?
CPT allows certain eligible F-1 students to participate in internships, cooperative education, practicums, or other practical training that is directly related to their academic program.
However, CPT is not a general work permit.
The training must meet specific immigration requirements and must be properly authorized before employment begins.
Why Is CPT Receiving More Attention?
Federal immigration authorities are placing greater emphasis on whether CPT employment is truly an integral part of an established curriculum.
Universities may therefore take a closer look at CPT requests, including the relationship between a student’s academic program and the proposed employment.
International students should not assume that an internship or job is permitted simply because it relates generally to their field of study.
Unauthorized Employment Can Have Serious Consequences
Maintaining F-1 status is extremely important.
Beginning employment without proper authorization can create immigration problems that may affect a student’s current status and potentially future immigration applications.
Students considering CPT should work closely with their school’s Designated School Official and make sure they have received the appropriate authorization before beginning employment.
